Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman, wife and dog found dead in Santa Fe home

Hmm. In the Larry King interview 20 years ago he said he was leaving a Hollywood for a quiet life and he did. He was 74 then and so read that he never did another acting gig. I’m sure there were roles for him…

He seemed to have wanted to quietly fade away and enjoy the quiet life. Did you make the coverage comment tongue in cheek or was he a looking for attention in his older years?

Just curious. The interview made him appear like he was done and sincerely wanted to get the fuck away from Hollywood and all its trapppings.

Regardless he had some classic roles in classic films.
It was neither tongue in cheek nor him being an attention seeker IMO but just something I can imagine atleast his publicist providing it for him???
With things of this nature, unless you were actually there in person, who the heck knows what really happened?
How did they live in an >3million dollar home though & not have decent security features like cameras though?

Old people (I’m 65) are sometimes slow on the uptake on “new” technology like house wide surveillance. It seems kinda creepy to some of us.

I agree though. Why the children/grandchildren didn’t have it installed just so they could watch dear old dad and be sure he hasn’t fallen.

But the whole 1-2 weeks dead deal is odd. Seems like someone he knew, or someone that loves them wouldn’t let 2 weeks go by without saying “Hi”.

The plot is thickening. I don’t think all three of them spontaneously had episodes of sudden cardiac arrest. Then again, stranger things have happened, right?

It's creepy no matter a person's age and invasive AF but, I didn't even mean house wide as that's a bit much but common areas & doorways, windows or Life Alert, ADT wearable alert buttons... that tech is 40 years old easily. Something... but there's been no mention of it regarding their home / lifestyle. 🤷‍♀️

It will be interesting to hear what supposedly happened.
As for his kids, well it be just like that sometimes. 😒

Well they are interested now. You know they are tearing the house apart looking for pops gold stash and grabbing anything not bolted down before the lawyers lock the house down,,,

Maybe not. Perhaps I being mean to his children. All I know is that they went at least a week without checking in on their 94 year old dad. That’s not nice and to me anyway shows a real lack of concern for their father.

Maybe his wife was super wife and they knew he was in good hands, but still…

I have had patients that survived near fatal CO poisonings describe brutal headaches, but they also said they were so confused that they did nothing for them. Things like taking an Advil didn’t register. Like “…I have a terrible headache, oh well…”.
In Europe, Advil is a non-prescription drug that anyone can buy at any time without a doctor's prescription
Obviously, if someone inhales toxic gas, they will have severe headache symptoms like carbon monoxide or cyanide poisoning.
The only difference between the two is that you can't do much with cyanide poisoning if it is severe because it goes down in a few minutes and death occurs, while carbon monoxide poisoning can take up to 45 minutes until death occurs.
I've seen photos from the 50's-60's when people put their heads in the oven, then stuck their heads in and ended up committing suicide that way, this was mostly typical of women

The US police are not very forthcoming about the death of Gene Hackman and his wife
They ruled out the possibility of death due to heating gas poisoning and the bodies were already 10-14 days old, Hackman's wife was already somewhat decomposed and mummified when they were found, Hackman was wearing a tracksuit and a T-shirt, next to his cane, it seems he passed out when he died or before he died
I think they are waiting for toxicology and the result of the autopsy

Hmm i'm think they decided to cash their chips in togeather and took the dog with them. Bet it was a nice peacefull death for em all.
I agree. Been saying this too many.
I'd put money in he dropped dead from old age, she's never gonna go on without him etc grabs the pills and overdoses herself in the bathroom. Takes her favorite dog with her.

Gene Hackman and wife both died of natural causes, but several days apart

Medical examiner Dr Heather Jarrell said Hackman was in the advanced stages of Alzheimer's disease, and it's "quite possible" he was not aware that his wife died a week earlier.

Authorities have released the exact cause of death of the couple.

Gene Hackman may have lived under the same roof with his dead wife for a week

The 95-year-old Oscar-winning actor died of cardiovascular disease, in which Alzheimer's disease was a significant contributing factor, said Heather Jarrell, New Mexico's chief medical examiner. Hackman's body was found to have advanced Alzheimer's disease and his general health was also seriously deteriorated.

His wife, Betsy Arakawa, 65, died of a rare viral infection called hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. The disease can be spread through the urine, feces or saliva of rodents and initially causes flu-like symptoms, then can lead to severe respiratory failure.

According to tests, Arakawa died on February 11, and Hackman probably died a week later, around February 18. Authorities say the actor had been in the same house with his wife for days before he died. No food was found in his stomach, but there were no signs of dehydration.

The couple were found during a welfare check on February 26 after weeks of no sign of life. Investigators initially considered the deaths suspicious, but ruled out carbon monoxide poisoning and found no signs of outside intrusion.

There were also three dogs in the house: one died in a cage, while the other two survived, likely having been able to go outside through a doggy door.
