Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman, wife and dog found dead in Santa Fe home

Wow. Like a horse riding accident? How does one survive an open pelvic fx?

I agree on the opiates. They energized me too, no dopey effects. I’m also grateful they are no longer in my life. At 65 I’m not pain free but Advil is wonderful.

Love to hear more details about your Fx. Have any gore pics or ugly X-rays you care to share with the GG family? We are very discrete…lol
I had a Clydesdale Arab cross. He was a big fellow and very gentle and calm. I was walking him along a grassy path next to a main road in the wet season in Darwin when his right foot slipped out. He counted with his left front foot and lowered his head. My stirrups were set a little low that day and I didn't bother fixing them. As he went down I slid to the apex of the English style saddle and then he pushed up hard and fast to regain his feet.

My genitals were the only padding between my pubis and the hard part of the saddle and my legs worked like levers and split my pubis 4cm wide. I felt or kind of heard a ripping sound and no pain for about 2 seconds then it went from zero to 15 out of 10 real quick until I was screaming and then a quiet voice in my head said 'shut the fuck up or you'll spook the horse' so I stopped screaming and realised I had to get off. I have no memory of swinging my right leg over the rear of the horse but my next memory is of my standing on the ground holding onto his mane and then letting go and falling over. Once I rolled into the foetal position the pain ceased. (I'm thinking endorphines here).

So I lay on my side with the horse calmly eating grass facing away from the road and waving my arm in the hope someone would see and help. Eventually a cyclist came over who was an army medic (big base in Darwin) and called an ambulance.

Young doc in ED said 'well, I think youll be ok to go home but we'll x ray you first'.

X ray techs said to each other 'Jesus, look at this!' I said what is it? they said 'the doc will explain in more depth but mate, you've done your pelvis!'

The young doc went all pale and they moved me into resuss and then I got medivaced down to Adelaide in a medical Lear jet and spent 3 months on my back after internal fixation, then two weeks at rehab learning to walk again and a few months at home before going back to work.

All great fun and I've not been on a horse since...

Never mind. I just researched “Open Book Pelvic Fx”. It’s not an “open” Fx in the way I think of an open Fx. Another stupid comment by yours truly. Forgive me.

Still fucking brutal and clearly a legit indication for bottles and bottles of opiates. Do you set off metal detectors now?
No, 18 months later, after months and months of feeling hot when others were cold and vice versa I was diagnosed with infected plates so off to Adelaide again for removal. My x rays still show nice holes in my pelvis...

Fuck. Weren’t you bleeding out as the ER doc was writing discharge orders? I have read about and was trained to treat them years ago. Pre-hospital treatment involves a pelvic binder and large bore IV’s for fluid replacement. Thing is they are very rare and typically the forces required to cause them cause other issues we focus on like airway and ventilation due to a crushed chest, major abdominal trauma, extremity trauma…things that make specific field treatment of the pelvis secondary with the exception of stabilization which is preformed as a matter of course in any multi-trauma patient.

I just read the last part of your comment so all below was answered.

I assume the x-Ray triggered a rapid response by the ER doc/ortho/blood bank and all the other things associated With a critical trauma patient?

Now I'm curious? Did you lose a lot of blood? Did you go directly to the OR? Did the ER Dr apologize?

You are a lucky man Wiggins. How far away from the hospital were you and was it a major, like teaching hospital or did you get transferred or flown to a trauma center?

Sorry about the 50 questions but I want to compare and contest Aussy critical trauma care with US if you don’t mind.

I will understand a simple “fuck off” too.

There is a Larry King interview with him like 20 years ago. Gene seemed like a really sincere, humble man. He was 74 at the time and said he was done with Hollywood. He moved to Santa Fe and never did another film.

It seems like the only people with any possible motive would be his offspring…not accusing anyone, but he seemed to be living a quiet life as a wealthy retiree in New Mexico.
I didn't see the interview, I'm not American (maybe it's on YouTube) and there is not much access to American channels where I live, maybe on the internet or you would have to install and pay for a very expensive satellite receiver to watch American channels
As a private person, I don't know what he was like, I saw a few of his films and I really thought he was an excellent actor, he played his roles extremely well in his films
He worked as an actor for about 60 years, filming about 80 or some of them high-grossing world-famous films, he obviously accumulated a significant amount of money by his old age

I will try to find it for you. He wasn’t what I expected, imagine that. Very humble. Very grateful for his success. He said he loved acting and filmmaking but he didn’t like watching his movies. He said it was like watching his grandfather becaise inside he still feels like he is 21. I can relate.

Anyway, he left Hollywood at 74 and never looked back. I gained a whole new appreciation for him as a man. Nothing like the hard ass villain he often played.

They plumbed me in resuss, catheter (very painful) and IV lines. MRI I think to check bleeding and pelvic placement? I had a lot of blood in my scrotum, swollen to 6 times normal size... huge! (blood removed when internal fixation placed in). Stabilised at Royal Darwin, major teaching hospital for population of 120 000. But specialist work like internal fixation was out sourced to Royal Adelaide Hospital, 4000 km south.

ED doc was a young English woman who said "You seem to be sicker than we thought..." Her face was white as a sheet, she was shitting herself!

My BP was good, the only time I went into shock was when they catheterised me. Genitals were pretty traumatised and it took fucking ages to get the damn tube in. I went cold and shaky after that. Hot blankets were nice as was some more morphine. Mainlined via the IV line, quick and tingly. I learned then what my junkies meant by the 'rush'...

Pelvic binder put on but after two days my skin broke down thus medivac to Adelaide for internal fixation.

That's about all I can recall at this time...

Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman was found dead alongside his wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, and their dog in their Santa Fe home on Wednesday afternoon.

Hackman was 95 at the time of his death and his wife 63.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff's office confirmed the death to Fox News Digital early Thursday morning.

"On February 26, 2025 at approximately 1:45 p.m., Santa Fe County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to an address on Old Sunset Trail in Hyde Park where Gene Hackman, 95 and his wife Betsy Arakawa, 64, and a dog were found deceased," the statement said.

The office confirmed that foul play is not suspected as a factor in the deaths at this time, but the cause of death has not been determined.

Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza originally told the Santa Fe New Mexican that at the time of the initial report they were conducting a preliminary death investigation.

"All I can say is that we're in the middle of a preliminary death investigation, waiting on approval of a search warrant," the sheriff said Wednesday evening, before his agency had positively identified the pair.

Hackman was best known for his Oscar-winning performances in "The French Connection" and "Unforgiven."

This is an active and ongoing investigation by the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office.

Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza and officials have not provided a cause or time of death.

You appear to be a very lucky man. I hope your beautiful horse didn’t have any long term psyc issues related to almost killing dad.

Genuinely gutted about this.....have lost sleep over it. Rip gene hackmans dog.......

Ahh, but if has leaks were obvious they wouldn’t kill. We shall see. I’m sticking to my guns absent additional facts.

They did release one fact other than “pills from an orange bottle were found…”

That fact is that his wife was found in a bathroom with a gas space heater.

I’ve been wrong many times before, but nothing released yet changes my mind. So what, I’m just a guy with a computer commenting. However in more than 30 years of responding to cries for help from the dying (and observers of the dead) I’ve seen many CO poisonings. This one has the ‘smell’ of CO poisonings. Again, absent other facts the dog’s death is telling.

No harm, no foul. I will buy you a coffee if I’m wrong.

Do you have a cause of death theory based on what has been released by official sources? Let’s throw it out there. I’m always open to others thoughts. Who knows, you may change my mind, meaning I’m wrong and owe you a fresh brew…

Not a bad choice as it is a completely painless death but you have to be careful because it is unnoticed and kills everyone who is in the room where the gas boiler is.
but there is another choice it's not painful either because you fall into a coma, although you need two more ingredients to stop breathing and the other one is to give you a heart attack and then you die

I have had patients that survived near fatal CO poisonings describe brutal headaches, but they also said they were so confused that they did nothing for them. Things like taking an Advil didn’t register. Like “…I have a terrible headache, oh well…”.

Nevermind. I owe you a coffee. The tissue CO test was negative…
Damn. I really thought that was it. I hope it’s wasn’t some terrible thing related to DV or anything. He was unrecognizable in the picture taken on march 2024. He looked like a frail, demented old man and she looked like his “not so interested in wiping his old ass anymore” keeper.

RIP Gene. You entertained generations and will continue for generations.

He probably died of old timer's disease. He was 95. She maybe didn't want to stick around without him. 🤷‍♀️ As for their one dog, I dunno why he got it versus all three but, it's all sus with the facts eluding to their possibly having been a break in but... I also would never put it past Hackman to pay another to make his death more interesting so he insures good and plentiful coverage.
I'm sure the MSM will drag the final official as long as folks are still interested in the story.

Have you ever considered switching to decaf?

Hmm. In the Larry King interview 20 years ago he said he was leaving a Hollywood for a quiet life and he did. He was 74 then and so read that he never did another acting gig. I’m sure there were roles for him…

He seemed to have wanted to quietly fade away and enjoy the quiet life. Did you make the coverage comment tongue in cheek or was he a looking for attention in his older years?

Just curious. The interview made him appear like he was done and sincerely wanted to get the fuck away from Hollywood and all its trapppings.

Regardless he had some classic roles in classic films.
