Lithium batteries do not react well to higher voltage or lower voltage about 4.2 to 2 volt is max and min for the batteries then they become unstable. US set standards so most batteries have circuits that monitor this and shut battery down before reaching dangerous parameters. The East not so much. The phones are probably counterfeit and lack the circuitry that a legit phone would have. A lithium battery will go up like a dried out pine tree. If they’re put in a charger too advanced for the battery, they certainly will explode like a firecracker. I watched a vape explode in a friend’s mouth after they used whatever an “advanced charging” charger is. It definitely happens whether you believe it or not.

You both are right. Lithium batteries go into a thermal runaway. As I said above burn like a dried out pine tree which almost looks like an explosion. But lithium once ignited does not need outside oxygen, it creates its own as it flares. Doing this in an enclosed container soon results in an over stressed explosion in whatever devise contained it. Vapes are a good example. This is much like a gasoline explosion If contained its gas will reach a critical expansion then explode.
