The conspicuous ABSENCE of decent PAVEMENTS in these countries strikes me again and again. Traffic lane and pedestrian area merge, so no one really knows whether they are in a danger zone.

I've seen a lot of villages like this in rural south east Asia. Just a couple of shit shacks along the road of the most active roadway to get between big provinces. So people blitz through and always take a couple kids or spin out of control and hit something else.
Sometimes people feel bad and scream that someone should put road bumps there, but also, they chose to build homes along major roadway instead of off of it. They don't even bother with the concept of a sidewalk half the time and use the road itself for walking, nor do they bother looking both ways, it's like they want to get hit.
