I bet he tried to "show them" by running headfirst into the bars but wasn't expecting them to flex so easy.
They probably did try to push his head back through thinking it would work in reverse as well. Sideways may have worked for getting his head through the bars in the first place. His sloped cranium likely allowed it to press through easily between the bars like the point of a fishhook. But in reverse, his chin would have acted as the barb. Oh! Wait. I get what you meant now.
