A member of the Jayapura SAR Office team named Tri Sudarno died while helping a suicidal person from the top of a BTS tower in West Sentani, Jayapura Regency, Wednesday (13/3/2024).
The incident began when the Basarnas team received a report of TY who attempted suicide by climbing the Telkomsel tower in West Sentani District, Jayapura Regency, Wednesday (13/3/2024).
Head of Basarnas RI, Air Marshal Kusworo said, "So yesterday afternoon, our team in Jayapura carried out a rescue operation for people who wanted to commit suicide on Telkomsel's tower with a height of between 40-30 m," Kusworo said during a working meeting with Commission V of the House of Representatives, Senayan, Jakarta, Thursday (14/3/2024).
Kusworo stated that Tri Sudarno was assigned to climb the Telkomsel tower. The victim had also received Tri's persuasion not to commit suicide. However, Tri received resistance from TY when he was 15 meters high. Tri was pushed which made both of them fall.
"We went down about 15 meters but unexpectedly the victim pushed our team so that they fell together," he said.
Sadly, Tri Sudarno died from serious head injuries. The Basarnas member and the suicidal youth were then taken to Yowari Hospital.
However, the Basarnas member died due to severe injuries. While the young man reportedly survived and was treated.
Meanwhile, Head of Basarnas Jayapura Melkianus Kotta said the chronology of events leading to the death of his members began when the process of evacuating victims from a height of approximately 50 meters went smoothly.
However, at a height of 15 meters, the victim who was helped resisted the late Tri Sudarno. The deceased pulled over and held on to the iron.
The young man who was about to be helped kept struggling and the deceased panicked. He then contacted a colleague at the top of the tower to tie the rope above.
When the rope knot position of the deceased and the victim was still in the break position, there was a buildup of rope, and at that time the victim who was being helped pushed his body out, finally the deceased panicked and his hand grip on the iron was released.
"The youth and the deceased fell. After that, the young man and the deceased who fell were evacuated to Yowari Hospital," said Melkianus Kotta.
