Nice response @Jimmy Nipplehouse

You're clearly a deep thinker aren't you son?
*sigh* The Warsaw pact was composed of countries Russia had basically occupied and were part of The Soviet Union. TheWarsaw Pact became moribund and was formally declared “nonexistent” on July 1, 1991, at a final summit meeting of Warsaw Pact leaders in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Deployed Soviet troops were gradually withdrawn from the former satellites, now politically independent countries. The Soviet Union was formally rejected by members of the Warsaw Pact, all of which, with the exception of the Soviet successor state of Russia, subsequently joined NATO. To summarize, THe Warsaw Pact was an occupation. NATO is a voluntary membership.

Zelensky was asking for this.

As he's been asking for Russia to attack Ukraine ever since he decided he wanted to join NATO.

It would be like Canada wanting to join the Warsaw Pact.
So what's he supposed to do as russia attacks cities & civilians? Ukraine was edging towards the EU & NATO well before Zelensky took office, it's not like he 'suddenly' decided his country was better off joining the EU, one of Ukraine's presidents agreed through parliament to have closer ties to the EU, then reneged & made a deal with putin against the parliaments wishes and we know the shit fight that started after that. What most don't understand is with the war in Donbas Ukraine couldn't join NATO anyway, all putin had to do was keep it cooking, BUT!, With Zelensky vowing to stop that shit fight---you just have to join the dots.

I know the Warsaw pact no longer exists. But I'm drawing an analogy here to seek to illistrate how and why Russia reacts as it does.

There is something in the Russian psyche that is paranoid about invasion. They have been invaded twice in 150 years. Once by the French and then by the Germans. There are people alive today who actually remember the last invasion.

In Aus we hear ad nauseum about the 'intergenerational trauma' the abos have about being 'invaded' back in 1788. In all the so called 'genocidal acts' that occured, the 'colonial' small pox epidemics etc etc they may have lost 100 000 people out of a million.

Russia lost over 20 000 000 in 41-45.

If you have a look at the map you will see the huge border that Ukraine and Russia share, including a big chunk of the Black Sea. The thought of NATO bases all over there is what makes Russia twitchy. Putin told everyone that if Ukraine attempted to join NATO he'd take the leash off the bear.

It would be like Canada joining the Warsaw Pact back in the time it still existed...
Remember how Kennedy reacted during the Cuban missile crisis.
