It has to do with the poisoning & murder of Muhammad's cousin Ali by Sunni clerics when Ali was supposed to be the next Ayatolla of the Islamic faith, Ali was going to turn the faith back to Sharia law as opposed to the Sunni law which was in force, these guys are self-flagellating in response to Ali's pain from the poisoning, they usually draw blood to prove that their worthy, this is why the Shia's & Sunni hate each others guts( I'm sure the Shia's got pay back)
