What is the philosophy behind this? I’m very intrigued. Actually, all of us are.

It is a type of Religious Flaggelation.
Religious flagellation is the act of voluntarily whipping or beating one’s own body as a form of extreme penance, devotion, or purification, with roots in ancient, medieval, and modern contexts. It was used to emulate Christ's sufferings, combat plagues (notably the 1348 Black Death), and seek redemption, often involving public, rhythmic processions by groups known as Flagellants.
Key historical aspects of religious flagellation include:

• Ancient Origins: Ritual flogging appeared in Greco-Roman and Egyptian cults, such as the Roman festival of Lupercalia and Spartan initiations, often meant as a substitute for human sacrifice or a means to increase fertility.
• Medieval Peak: Emerging strongly in the 13th century, public flagellant movements grew in response to fear, war, and plague. Although Pope Clement VI condemned the movement in 1349, the practice continued within some Christian monastic orders and lay confraternities.
