We used to use those really skinny firecrackers for that, called ladyfingers. Too small to do any real damage , but loud and concussive enough to scare the shit out of your bud while you piss yourself laughing.
Haha! Kind of reminds me of these little things they used to sell at the fireworks stands when I was a kid. You put them in the end of someone's cigarette or cigar and when they lit it, it would explode. Ah the good ole days.
