If anything it's a lesson in always being prepared to defend yourself, the man could have just as easily snatched the children let alone their jar of money. Maybe teach your children how to defend themselves, maybe an introductory course in self defense and knife handling skills, maybe give them training in the use of a .22 long rifle then as they get older get them acclimated to shooting bigger guns so when they're adults they won't ever become victims again.
