I'd like to think of it more along the lines of these people use to have a purpose in their stupidity, they were the peasants who tilled the fields and made a subsistence living for themselves while also providing tax revenue to their local area. Now, these people no longer work the fields due to technology like tractors replacing them. So now the taxes collected from the mostly automated farms goes to fund welfare which goes to the stupid people who would have otherwise been the peasant class, who contributed very little and still contribute very little. So nothing much really has changed. The biggest mistake we made as a society was seeing them as equals and letting them vote. This was a very bad idea because these people are way too stupid to vote properly and fall for outlandish lies. The only good thing is these people are also very easy to market to so if you own a corporation like McDonald's, Absolute Vodka, or Camel cigarettes you can have a steady customer base.
