– Police have accused 18-year-old Alexis Valdez of cutting off the head of his aunt’s boyfriend, then leaving the head on her bed “as a present” for Christmas.
Prosecutors say the teen was living with his aunt and her boyfriend, 41-year-old Silvestre Diaz-Hernandez, inside a basement apartment. After multiple arguments, the couple told Valdez he would have to move out since he was unable to help pay the bills.
Instead, Valdez attacked Diaz-Hernandez on Christmas morning, smashing in the man’s skull with a hammer. He then turned up some music, covered the apartment’s windows, and proceeded to cut off Diaz-Hernandez’s head. He also cut off the man’s left arm, his ears and his nose. After gouging out the man’s eyes, the teen placed the decapitated head on his aunt’s bed.
“He wanted to ‘leave his aunt a present,’” Assistant State’s Attorney Kingsley Sawyer told reporters.
Before leaving the apartment, Valdez called 911 to report a dead body. When the 911 operator asked if he’d attempted CPR, Valdez just laughed and informed the operator that the body had no head.
When police found Valdez, he was covered with blood and confessed to murdering Diaz-Hernandez. He also told them that had his aunt came home and seen what he’d done, then he would’ve killed her as well.
Valdez has been charged with first-degree murder and was ordered held without bail.
