Thoughts on selective empathy?

I've read a bit about so called "selective empathy" and am very curious to hear others opinions. I feel this is a good place to ask. I don't know if I believe in the idea that it's unique, seeing as in many situations I believe everyone has a different level of empathy towards different things. Some articles say it's a sign of a psychopath, but it is said a psychopath has no empathy at all. I find it very interesting how a person, including myself, can have very little to no feeling at all when it comes to strangers being hurt or dying, or hurting someone else, but can't handle seeing someone they care for, or more commonly a child or animal in distress. I feel like alot of people I've seen on websites such as this have the same reaction when it comes to seeing animal/child abuse. The stimga of these sites is that we are all sick and twisted, but I've seen some of the most caring people in places like this. Some of the most empathetic people I've ever met, have done some of the sickest things. I guess I'm just curious how many people believe in selective empathy. I'm still doing research because I can't figure out if I believe it's real or just a bunch of over thought medical nonsense. 🤔🧐

I'm not sure if it's Selective or just Automatic! With People that We know,We enter a Relationship with them,Being it Friendly/Sexual/or a Working Relationship, But some sort of Relationship none the less! We get to know and like them,Common interests etcetera...But Strangers don't mean Dick to Us,And B'cuz there's alot of Nutjobs our there; We put up Protective Barricades,And then when something happens to them,We in a sense believe that it's Deserved! It's an interesting subject,And I'm gonna put more thought into it now! Thanks 4 tweaking My Cranium! 🤙...SP

But being serious, answering your question...I reckon some people are born with a chemical imbalance and are psycho from birth...Most people know someone that had all the love and affection and surroundings to thrive, but ended up some dead shit criminal...
On the other hand, Your surroundings and life experiences and upbringing can shape your application of empathy towards other humans....Like my ol' man used to say, you wanna survive in a violent world, you have to be violent yourself...
Look at media and music...Most thoughts we have, are actually not our own original thoughts and have been molded by music, media and the education system...
Here is a Plato quote...
Music directly imitates the passions or states of the soul... when one listens to music that imitates a certain passion, he becomes imbued withthe same passion; and if over a long time he habitually listens to music that rouses ignoble passions, his whole character will be shaped to an ignoble form

I don't really understand why people get so angry/triggered/emotional when it comes to kids and animal videos.
Maybe it's the human response to want to protect them, but when you think about, kids/animals won't go through as much distress as say a 30 year old. Their brain isn't as advanced or developed, so they're less aware of their own mortality.
Imagine getting cut in half by a train, an adult will be more distressed because they're very aware of how final death is.
A dog might be in pain but it has no sense of self, I'd rather be the dog than the adult if it was me sliced in half. People are imagining they know what a dog is going through, but it's impossible.
My 2 cents.

And another thing...Capitalism rewards having no empathy toward your fellow man...It is a dog eat Dog step over your own mother to make a buck system we are a part of...We are taught to be ruthless in our pursuit of money and material possessions, and then this carries on into our social existance and how we treat our fellow man...

Very true, it's a very opinion based subject I believe. I've always been curious to why I love watching a good gorey video, or better yet a violent fight in person, but the second someone kicks a cat I wanna stab them.
