Dismembered Toronto Woman Identified

A Toronto woman whose body parts were found in a duffel bag in the city’s west end last month has been identified, police say.
About a third of Rigat Essag Ghirmay’s remains were found in a duffel bag by a creek near Alliance Avenue and Humber Boulevard on May 24.
Det. John Margetson of the homicide unit said the 28-year-old victim, who was originally from Eritrea, was on social assistance, learning English and looking forward to becoming a citizen.
She and the accused were acquaintances and lived with one another at some point but their exact relationship hasn’t been determined. The two may have attended the same ESL school and taken a cooking class together, he said.
An exact cause of death hasn’t been determined, but police believe the victim was dismembered at her apartment at 285 Shuter St.
Police are still looking for Ghirmay’s remains but searches in recent days of the stream bed using cadaver dogs and a marine unit, as well as searches of two city transfer stations, have turned up nothing.
Anyone who may have witnessed the green duffel bag being moved around May 15-24 is asked to contact police at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-8477 (TIPS).
Police say criminal charges against the accused may be upgraded to murder.
Adonay Zekarias, 41, who came here from Eritrea in 2009 and is a permanent resident, was arrested on May 27 at his apartment at 101 Humber Blvd. S. and charged with indignity to a dead body.
Zekarias, who was also on social assistance and doesn’t have friends or family in the city, was recorded on security video from both his and the victim’s residences moving heavy luggage, Margetson said.
