I finally got around to doing some stuff to my bike. I re-jetted the carburetor with a 145 main jet (up from 140 stock), adjusted the valves to the proper specs (they were WAY too tight and I was floating my exhaust valve), installed an adjustable needle and a new idle fuel mixture screw and I removed the air box cover and the intake snorkel to tidy up the air flow. I also put my aluminum skid plate on and removed the flimsy stock hand guards.
The new main jet and idle fuel mixture screw. It took me about three hours of swearing and drilling to remove the horrid stock screws that held on the float bowl and top cap. Shitty cheap metal and ridiculous torque specs are a nightmarish combination. I replaced them with some nice stainless hex-head screws. There is something indescribably sexy about the Mikuni BST-40...
It definitely sounds like a big bore thumper now that the air box is opened up. The throttle is much more snappy now and the power band is a lot broader now. I can get up to 70mi/h in fourth gear with all of fifth gear available now when that used to be the absolute max it could do. It still needs an entire weekend of tweaking to get it where I want it but the improvement so far with only a $75 jet kit and a free valve adjustment is mind blowing. I'm going to try to get my new handlebar and throttle tube installed this weekend.
