Aussie David “Davo” Johnson has made history of the Isle of Man TT… and the racing hasn’t even started. | Road | Sport

In final qualifying for tonight’s opening race, the six-lap (380km) Superbike TT, Johnson emerged as the fastest ever rider of a British motorcycle with a lap average of 128.5mph.

He surpassed Cameron Donald’s best time of 124.6mph on the Norton at last year’s TT and took the title of “fastest rider of a British bike” off TT folk hero Guy Martin (126.8mph set last year on a Triumph Supersport racer).

Johnson took the Norton prototype V4 to a solid eighth place on Friday with a top speed of 194.5mph through the speed trap down Sulby Straight. It was the fastest top speed of the session.

His puts him 12th overall in all times taken over the week. He is on target for a strong top-10 finish in what is shaping up to be a record-breaking race.

Already Michael Dunlop and Ian Hutchinson have unofficially smashed John McGuinness’s lap record on their BMWs and a 133mph lap is in sight tonight.

Strangely, Hutchinson’s amazing lap of 132.8 132.803mph, 0.786s quicker than McGuinness’s record in last year’s Senior TT race, was set on his Superstock BMW.

His crew credited this machine’s superior electronics to those of his Superbike for this achievement.

Last year’s Superbike TT winner Kiwi Bruce Aynstey qualified in 12th place last night, hobbled by an ankle injury sustained in a practice crash. But he is eight fastest overall.

He will either race a Honda Fireblade or “customer-spec” MotoGP V4 replica RC213.

Aussie Cameron Donald finished 30th overall on his Honda, slowed by a week of problems. In one practice session his engine blew up at 240km/h.

It was a slow start to Johnson’s first effort on the Norton. A run of small technical issues limited his track time early in the week.

Then a few hours testing at Jurby airport revealed that the fairing had been flexing so much at speed that when he hit a bump it temporarily activated the kill switch.

A bit of trimming and he hit the track running with a first lap on Thursday night at a 127mph average, then slightly better on the second.

After a refuel and new tyre he hit 128.3 and finally was close to 129mph.

By now he had covered twice the distance of a MotoGP race, an indication of how much a challenge the TT is on rider and machinery.

Johnson reported that the Spondon-framed, 200bhp MotoGP-spec Aprilia V4 powered Norton was stable at speed and handling well.

He then upped the ante on Friday evening’s final practice, nudging a 130mph average lap speed until stopped by a mechanical problem.

He has two Nortons available and is happy that new electronics have finally tamed the bike that Cameron Donald helped developed but struggled with at last year’s TT.

The Superbike TT starts at 11am UK time (8pm EST Australia ) with 69 starters. Fans can view live timing and audio commentary on the internet via Manx Radio TT and the official TT website.

The Spaniard was involved in an accident at turn 12 during the second free practice for the intermediate class, and after being immediately transferred by the medical team to hospital in Barcelona, sadly passed away.

As the motorcycling fraternity unites at this difficult time, Lucio Cecchinello, Cal Crutchlow and the whole of the Team will mourn the loss of an extremely popular and talented rider.

Aussie Tragedy at Isle of Man TT | News | Road | Sport

Australian sidecar racer Dwight Beare has died following an accident during last night’s opening Isle of Man TT Sidecar race.

Dwight’s passenger Ben Binns, an Isle of Man resident, was airlifted to the local Hospital and his condition is described as stable.

Details are sill limited, but early reports suggest he 27-year-old Melbournian, who has been living on the Isle of Man, was involved in an accident near Rhencullen. The race was immediately red flagged.

Beare made a stunning TT debut in 2014. Accompanied by his father Noel riding as passenger, then pair scored a stunning 12th place finish in only their second race.

It's been a rough early season for motorcycle racing in 2016: while the death of Moto2 rider Luis Salom at Catalunya last Friday grabbed headlines, a number of riders have lost their lives in recent weeks.


Two riders were killed at the Isle of Man TT (Dwight Beare and Paul Shoesmith) and additionally a rider killed was at the Northwest 200 (Malachi Mitchell Thomas) a few weeks ago.

Salom's crash was an odd one and some suggested that equipment failure might be to blame. Also, that he crashed after hitting a large bump made some suspect that his brakes suffered a hydraulic issue and pushed the pads and pistons back into the calipers which may have led to a momentary loss of brakes.

A statement from Salom's team, though, seems to suggest that his crash was the result of a series of bad things happening to the young Moto2 rider after he pitted for a new rear tire.

On Friday June 3rd Luis Salom passed away during the Gran Premi of Catalunya FP2 session after an accident suffered at the turn 12 of the Catalunya circuit.

After receiving the telemetry data yesterday Sunday June 5th by the organization, the technical staff of the SAG Team held immediately a meeting to personally determinate the facts of the accident and to communicate afterwards with exactitude what happened in technical terms at the fatal turn 12 of the Circuit of Catalunya. In the comprehensive analysis done on the telemetry data assisted the owner of the team Edu Perales, the team manager Jordi Rubio, the chief mechanic of Luis Salom Bernat Bassa, the chief mechanic of Jesko Raffin Michael Ferger, the Moto2 rider Jesko Raffin and the manager of Luis Salom Marco Rodrigo.

During the course of the FP2, Luis Salom faced his first laps and makes his best lap (1'48.608) before making his first pit stop to change the rear tire of the bike. After that, Salom comes back on the track and during that same out of the pits lap he suffers the accident. In that lap, Luis arrived to the turn 12 braking reference point 6 km/h slower than his fastest lap, according to the telemetry that was because a lower acceleration at the exit of turn 11. Due to that reduced speed, Luis operated the brakes 9 meters later to maintain a proper corner speed at the turn 12. At the entry of the corner there is an irregularity on the asphalt known by all the riders (bump). The delay of the braking instant made Luis to maintain the brakes operated running over that asphalt irregularity, as opposed the previous laps where he already had released the brakes on that spot. All of that added to an even speed than his best lap of the FP2 produced a stress on the front tire and a grip lost on the irregularity of the asphalt. That grip lost produced the crash with the tragic outcome that we all know.

These telemetry data provided by the organization are available to any qualified technician with desires to analyze it.

TT 2016: Imperious Dunlop crowned Senior champion

Michael Dunlop smashed the absolute lap record at the Isle of Man TT with a lap of almost 134mph to clinch the prestigious PokerStars Senior trophy with a commanding performance on Friday.

The 27-year-old from Ballymoney is celebrating a famous big bike double on the Hawk Racing BMW after winning last Saturday's RST Superbike TT.

Dunlop has now won five times in the premier class around the Mountain Course and has moved onto 13 wins in total as he ended arch-rival Ian Hutchinson's winning streak this week.

Honda Racing's John McGuinness finished on the podium in third place ahead of Dean Harrison (Silicone Engineering Kawasaki), with Bruce Anstey on the Valvoline Padgett's Honda RC213V-S MotoGP replica and Conor Cummins (Honda Racing) the top six.

The Ulster rider set a hot pace from the off in the delayed race, which finally got underway at 3.45pm after a series of interruptions due to mist and fog, opening up with another sub-17 minute lap of 133.256mph (16m 59.304s).

Dunlop had established a lead of 2.8 seconds over Hutchinson, whose first standing start lap was 132.887mph. By the time they reached Glen Helen on lap two, his advantage had increased to five seconds, with Peter Hickman running in third on the JG Speedfit Kawasaki, ten seconds behind Hutchinson.

A fired up Dunlop, who saw Hutchinson win both Supersport races and the Superstock event to boost his tally to 14 victories, raised the outright lap record to 133.962mph (16m 53.929s) as he stretched his advantage to 9.2 seconds. His stunning lap was only 0.28s off a landmark 134mph average, taking almost 10 seconds off the the old lap record set by McGuinness in 2015.

As expected it was a two-horse race between Dunlop and Tyco BMW rider Hutchinson, but just as he did in last Saturday's RST Superbike race, Dunlop effectively broke the Yorkshireman's resolve with two searing laps from the off and barring any mishaps, the Northern Ireland rider seemed to have matters under control.

There was huge disappointment for Hickman, who retired from third place on lap two at the Bungalow, with McGuinness moving into podium contention following the first pit stops ahead of Flying Kiwi Anstey.

Dunlop fired in a speed of 126.391mph on his third lap after the fuel stops compared to Hutchinson's lap of 126.164mph, building a cushion of 11.2 seconds.

McGuinness, last year's Senior TT winner, consolidated third place, but Anstey was now coming under pressure from Harrison.

Dunlop was maintaining a scorching pace although his fourth lap of 133.001mph was slightly slower than Hutchinson, who clocked 133.080mph to pull a second back.

Dunlop, though, had plenty in reserve and after the second round of pit stops at the end of lap four, he held a lead of 16 seconds at Ballaugh, with McGuinness 30 seconds back on Hutchinson.

Bradford's Harrison had now moved ahead of Anstey to slot into fourth, while Conor Cummins was holding sixth on the Honda Racing Fireblade.

Dunlop was catching sight of Hutchinson on the roads, who started 20 seconds ahead of him at No.4 and he hunted down the Bingley Bullet relentlessly, taking over the lead on the road at Ramsey on the last lap.

It was plain sailing for Dunlop from then on, who lapped at 131.345mph on his sixth and final lap to win the legendary Senior trophy for a second time on BMW machinery following his maiden triumph in the showpiece race in 2014.

Hutchinson finished 31.476s behind at the end with McGuinness completing the podium, a further 31 seconds in arrears.

Harrison clinched a fine fourth place as he finished 52.7 seconds behind McGuinness, with Anstey on the RC213V-S MotoGP replica coming home in fifth position.

Manx rider Cummins took sixth, with Michael Rutter (Bathams SMT BMW) and Lee Johnston on the East Coast/Burdens BMW completing the first eight.

James Hillier (Quattro Plant Muc-Off Kawasaki) and Lightweight TT winner Ivan Lintin (Devitt RC Express Kawasaki) were the top ten.

William Dunlop retired his Yamaha R1 in the pits at the end of lap two, while Dave Johnson came off the Norton at Sulby Bridge, but was reported as OK.

Irish rider Alan Bonner crashed at Creg-ny-Baa on the Devitt RC Express Kawasaki but was also reported to be OK.

TT 2016: Irked Hutchy in spat with Dunlop

An irate Ian Hutchinson has suggested he will have a rethink over his future at the Isle of Man TT after the Tyco BMW rider criticised Senior race winner Michael Dunlop in an awkward press conference.

The Yorkshire rider, who was soundly beaten by his BMW rival in the blue riband race on Friday by more than half-a-minute, accused Dunlop of submitting a protest over the piston used in his Team Traction Control Yamaha after he completed a Supersport double with victory in Wednesday's race.

Ulsterman Dunlop had been excluded from the results of the first Supersport race on Monday due to a technical infringement, with Northern Ireland team Mar-Train Racing later issuing a statement claiming responsibility for an unintentional oversight after supplying the 27-year-old with a motor for the TT.

Hutchinson, who repeated his 2015 Supersport and Superstock treble this week to draw level with Mike Hailwood on 14 victories, said: “I've done my best to congratulate Michael all week and he's done well but on Wednesday I was pretty disgusted by his behaviour to be honest.

“The scruntineers were suspect about something but there was nothing wrong, but then Michael protested and tried to spread a rumour that we had oversized pistons, so I need to have a pretty big think about coming back to the TT to be honest.

“I think the organisers need to explain what was going on there.”

Hutchinson also revealed that he used his Superstock engine for the Senior race and suggested Dunlop had benefitted from a superior factory engine for his Hawk Racing Superbike supplied by BMW Motorrad in Munich.

“We just struggled with the engine that we had last week and the power was a little bit different to the engine that Michael got and we didn't have that engine here, so I opted to run the Superstock engine in my Superbike,” he said.

“The bike was great and it's been faultless, but obviously it wasn't the right thing to do to win the race, but we tried our best.

“The engine last week had no bottom end [power] and all top end, so it was quite difficult to ride and the latest spec engine that Michael's team have has bottom end and top end,” added Hutchinson.

“The Superstock bike has the bottom end and no top end – a mixture of everything – so I knew I'd be down a little bit on speed but I could ride the bike hard and I've done six laps the best I could do today and that's it, we've been beaten.”

Asked for his response during a tense post-race press conference, Dunlop said his BMW engine was no different from anything the Tyco BMW team had received.

“I don't need to [respond]. It was a scrutineer pointed at it, not me, and that's just the way it goes. If he wants to have a go at me, I've no problem – I'm a big enough man to take it on the chin and it makes no difference to me,” Dunlop said.

“My engines are no different to anybody else's – we got factory engines and I would like to say thank you to the boys in Munich and even though BMW got rid of me, I've still got good friends in there.

"They put me a good engine together but it's no different to what anyone else got – anyone else can buy them and they're the exact same,” he added.

“Maybe it's because we're not a factory team this time and we were able to buy what we wanted and we made a good job of it. I just put my head down – simple.”

And if you stop the vid bang on 13:02 it looks like Dunlop is gonna crack Hutchy over the head with the champagne bottle. Nice toucnn buy McPint walking in with a beer and draining half of it before he sits down while the athletes drink their water LOL

 
10th yesterday in WSBK on the Kawasaki ZX10r not overly happy because I know can do better. But we get another chance today in race 2. and the team are letting me do a test on the bike Monday so we can finally make some real changes to improve the set up. I know this bike have potential to do better.
