Cats have soft pads on their paws and no claws to go 'click' until they unsheathe them.

Note how it must have bitten into the spine to paralyse the dog so fast. I have read that cats can feel the soft part between the vertebrae with their teeth and can severe the spine with precision. Sabre tooth cats used their long canines to do exactly that to mega fauna.
