Yep, fire is the best when there's a real winter. Our family's old house has a nice fire/heating system too, three open fireplaces in three rooms (all in one chimney) and the kitchen have the maintenance openings when you want to heat with coal. As a boy I had to run in the basement to carry briquettes and wood above for our granny, Later a modern gas heating got added.
I love that, i bet it throws out loadsa heat.

Same, you really can't beat a log burner, so good the one fire blasts enough heat out for a whole house. Heres mine. On already because despite it being beautiful and sunny here in Wales it is cold enough to freeze your tits off. I can cook on the top too, lid lifts up and has a soap stone top. use it quite a bit for slow cooking.
Honestly no idea, bloke who sells it to me, 80 quid for a massive trailer full.. kiln dries it and its either hard wood or soft wood depending... but not sure of actual species, the current one smells gorgeous, I keep a fair sized stack in the fire place and Its scenting the whole house. I find a mix of coal/logs lasts longer tho and when you open the fire doors you get that lovely smell of coal tar.

I hand chop all our firewood.
We go for buckskin larch and birch.
Nothing beats a wood so seasoned it dulls the chainsaw as you cut it.

I didnt know you could burn birch, thanks for that. I have a large woodland near me full of birch. I will collect the branches etc
