A slap is not really meant as an injury. A slap is meant to insult a person. Shame them , bring them embarrassment. The father is teaching this dude a lesson by slapping him in public. He further admonishes him by telling him if he should ever beat his daughter again, the slaps will be replaced by a closed fists.
