The accident occurred during work on the well. A hoisting unit caught fire. According to investigators, this was the result of a safety violation.

Ohhhh Fuck! I was a medic in Kuwait putting out the fires back when most of you were still on mommies nipple (some still are but I digress).

This was our worst nightmare. Thank God it never happened to my crew. The worst we had was a guy driving a Cat with a sheet metal cab over it that lit a smoke and got flashed by the flames. Never smoke when driving a Cat through endless pools of crude oil…we had an incredible evac plan and he was on a Gulfstream to a burn center in Germany within an hour.

Had this vid scenario happened we had 4-8 hose lines pointed and ready to go, but they would tear your skin off. We did wear cotton, not Nomex coveralls, a Nomex hood, cotton gloves and leather steel toed boots so if you could get out of the cellar and behind some tin you may get out ok.

It doesn’t take flames on body to burn you. The heat from the well fire is enough.

Shitty way to go.
