Thoughts on selective empathy?

(This is my first post so apologies if it isn't in the right place)
I've read a bit about so called "selective empathy" and am very curious to hear others opinions. I feel this is a good place to ask. I don't know if I believe in the idea that it's unique, seeing as in many situations I believe everyone has a different level of empathy towards different things. Some articles say it's a sign of a psychopath, but it is said a psychopath has no empathy at all. I find it very interesting how a person, including myself, can have very little to no feeling at all when it comes to strangers being hurt or dying, or hurting someone else, but can't handle seeing someone they care for, or more commonly a child or animal in distress. I feel like alot of people I've seen on websites such as this have the same reaction when it comes to seeing animal/child abuse. The stimga of these sites is that we are all sick and twisted, but I've seen some of the most caring people in places like this. Some of the most empathetic people I've ever met, have done some of the sickest things. I guess I'm just curious how many people believe in selective empathy. I'm still doing research because I can't figure out if I believe it's real or just a bunch of over thought medical nonsense. 🤔🧐
It's not psychopathy.
It's choosing to feel for someone or avoid feeling for someone. It's like, you choose so it's basically free will.

Like say your dog gets hit by a car. I am your neighbor and my dog too gets hit by a car on the same day. Except you let your dog run loose, my dog was hit by a car because it came crashing through my house. Though I feel your pain, I'll choose not to feel for you though it is really sad.

You are hot...
People have more empathy for parents, siblings friends etc... over random strangers , the thing is Whenever someone says "selective", it is automatically labeled as a negative.

A term I've been using for years. It's one of the main reasons I don't give a shit about other people. I don't see the point when everyone is arbitrarily impervious to a lot of the people around them. Watching people talk about that kind of shit is like a bad joke.

Going on about chemical imbalances, the Romans used lead pipes in all the areas they conquered & western society has used lead in a shit load of products as well as the rest of the world & NOW it's banned by most places as being shit for health, lead traces in the body will be passed on through generations & fuck up mental stability, my guess is the constant use of lead by our ancestors has created the chemical imbalances that plague society today with all their gender problems plus many other defects.

This one looks like a good kisser :freak:

I don't really understand why people get so angry/triggered/emotional when it comes to kids and animal videos.
Maybe it's the human response to want to protect them, but when you think about, kids/animals won't go through as much distress as say a 30 year old. Their brain isn't as advanced or developed, so they're less aware of their own mortality.
Imagine getting cut in half by a train, an adult will be more distressed because they're very aware of how final death is.
A dog might be in pain but it has no sense of self, I'd rather be the dog than the adult if it was me sliced in half. People are imagining they know what a dog is going through, but it's impossible.
My 2 cents.
When you watch countless videos of atrocities and generally only comment a joke or some other derogatory bs.. it can make you appear to have some moral standing. I'm fairly sure most do it out of basically courtesy, it's an unspoken rule eh, don't hurt animals, don't hurt kids.. I wanna watch some young lady be brutally murdered, preferably ending in her mangled and mutilated corpse being spread eagle across the pavement fingers crossed we get a pussy shot.. slag! ROFL lol lmao ahaha
But don't hurt the animals, I'm a lovely person who can't deal with that.

It's transparent fakery for the sake of forum relations
Much like people in the real world
They're just keeping up appearances

I dislike most people so videos of adults being torn apart do not bother me. Honestly I don't lose sleep over kids either but I won't search that out. Animals are a whole other story. I've walked on semi frozen lake that could have wound me up here on a video to rescue a dog. Animals are better than us and that's why I can't see that.

From a psychological perspective, we all possess empathy and are selective in how we dole it out. That's inherent in human nature, unless you're a psychopath/sociopath. In Psychology, we don't see empathy as an all or nothing proposition but as levels of empathy. Also, human nature tends to revert to situational ethics when dealing with other people.

How people react to murder in broad daylight in rural Kansas is different than how people react to the same circumstance in urban NYC, Detroit, Chicago or L.A.. That bystander effect is a real thing.

I've often pondered the pathology of people who frequent gore sites and I'm convinced that it's a microcosm of society.

For a 1st post, this is an interesting thread. When we hear the words: empathy or empath, the first thoughts that leap to people's minds is, "What a blessing.", "What an unselfish person to feel another's pain...". But it's not that simple at all. I am an empath which is part of the reason I'm an introvert. I try to avoid people because I always put them in the spotlight while in their presence, focusing on everything they say, their gestures, their nonverbal communication. Quite frankly, it drains me of all my energy and then I seek quiet, peace, the need to get away from the constant chaos. I care too much with no control over it. This puts me in the constant situation of trying to avoid people. So empathy is not what it's cracked up to be. There are way too many people in the world. If someone tells you that a neighbor, you've never met, at the far end of the road died of a heart attack....your energy is already spent on the people you do know. So, it's not wrong to not care about one human out of a billion you don't know.
