It would have been nice to see an actually retarded Barbie doll, and not the usual plastic surgery enhanced image of a person.

Its very self affirming for girls to see positive representations of themselves in the world, instead of the unattainable beauty standards that are plowed down our throats day in and day out. Boys don't have the same pressures on them in terms of appearance. While you were playing with optimus prime, girls were already comparing themselves to celebrities and to each other. If a doll that has down syndrome makes this girl, who cannot control her disability, feel better, then who cares if its "necessary?" Dolls at all aren't "necessary."

As someone who's worked with people with Downs, this doesn't look Downs to me at all. But as long as the Downs population embraces it, that's all that matters

Can you tell downs from and ultrasound? I thought you had to test amniotic fluid.
They test the width of the neck from memory but for the definitive test you are right, it's amniocentesis.
The following disabilities are in decline due to birth abnormalities being picked up and subsequent aborttion:
- Downs
- Hunchbacks
- spina bifida
