FYI UK television licences

I'm in the UK at present, fly home to Aus tomorrow. I knew that if you have a TV you have to have a licence here so looked it up.

Fuck me! It's 170 pounds a year for a colour set and 57 pounds for a black and white set.

But wait, if you are legally blind it's half price...

I have no idea why the good citizens of the UK are not marching about this rather than marching about a bunch of sand niggers in a country they will never visit.

Can someone from UK explain this for me?

Doesn't take much to email them and say that we don't watch bbc, or any freeview channels..That we only watch Netflix, Amazon, Paramount ect...

I remember rumours when i was younger about a van coming round with some sorta equipment to tell if you watched tv ect. Hahaha. B4 all these other apps...

Correct, it was a myth - the only technical equipment in those vans were the driver's eyes...looking in people's windows to see the tell-tale flickering of a television set, which is why you would NEVER see one of these vans during the day, only at dusk or early evening.

It's meant to pay for the BBC , they sell their programs all over the world and make a fortune .It's basically a tax on television . Everyone in the UK was forced to go over to digital by the government , so you pay for tv anyway . The British tax system is a fucking joke and hasn't really changed since the middle ages . There are individual taxes on everything meaning you pay several taxes on one thing . is cars ; separate tax on road tax , fuel , insurance , mot . They all have a tax although some are a hidden tax . I mean you pay tax on benefits for fucks sake

I never pay for one, they send their threatening letters about enforcement agents visiting and all the other bull shit to try and scare you to buy one, I just ignore them, and if anyone comes knocking they get politely told to fuck off.

I did not know that. Here we haven't watched a live program on such a receiver in ages. We got rid of our satellite television account some years ago. We try to listen to Mother Nature. I would strongly object to such charges, particularly with what's on these days!

Nope, used to be one regularly round here (think the van was in a lock up not far away) one of our neighbours got caught by one, they had a license for a B&W but had a colour TV
