You are right that the FAL is a Belgian-made weapon but the British also adopted it from the 1950s under the name Rifle No.9 Mk1 in "280 British" caliber
The Australians also produced their own version which is deceptively similar as the L1A1 Self Loading Rifle or SLR
The British FAL which the British replaced with the SA80 bullpup but it will now certainly be replaced soon by an M416 Sig Sauer based assault rifle

The FAL may have been an FN product but the British commonwealth made it the "right arm of the free world". I have probably put 10,000 rounds through different iterations of the gun altogether. It's not a great rifle in modern context but I have a soft spot for it.
