The first thing I thought of when I saw this story about a month ago is her parents are partly to blame. She didn’t have a mother who taught her to cover herself up so she looks as androgynous as possible when she’s walking alone at night. They taught her to trust her environment at all times - there are no baddies lurking in the shadows - let them into your apt. bldg. Also, they never taught her about evil. I’ve told my kids since they were tweens when they needed to hone their common sense skills that there are people in this world who would kill you just for looking at them. Her boomer hippy dippy parents taught her to love and trust everyone - especially if they were not white. So many “if only” moments…
