Ronald José Salvador Montenegro, 55, was the man who died after being struck by an iron bar while weightlifting at a gym in Olinda. According to his family, he had two children, was passionate about Carnival, and had been weightlifting for over 30 years.
The incident occurred on Monday (December 1st) in the Jardim Atlântico neighborhood and was filmed. The footage shows Ronald performing a bench press with a free weight bar when the equipment slips from his hands and falls onto his chest. After the impact, he gets up but falls to the ground seconds later.
The incident occurred at RW Academia, which expressed regret over the event and stated that it provided immediate assistance to the victim. According to the president of the Regional Council of Physical Education (Cref), the way Ronald was holding the bar is known as a "suicide grip" and may have caused the accident.
The case was registered by the Civil Police as an "accidental death", and the autopsy report has not yet been finalized. The images show Ronald holding the bar, supporting it with the palms of his hands and other fingers, without wrapping his thumbs around it.
After being struck by the bar, Ronald José Salvador Montenegro gets up, but falls to the ground seconds later. He was rescued and taken by staff to the Emergency Care Unit (UPA) in Rio Doce, but did not survive.
