Born May 21, 1950 in Philadelphia, Joseph Breslin had a history of mental illness, spending time in two seperate Pennsylvania mental institutions during the 1960s.
In 1968, he killed another patient and attacked a nurse. The details of these incidents weren't released and ultimately covered up for confidentiality reasons.

In 1975, Breslin was transfered to the California Men's Colony where he was aquainted with his cell mate Douglas Cain. Two years later for reasons unknown, he shot a man in the head with a shotgun but the victim survived his attack. Breslin was given a three year prison term after accepting a plea deal which reduced his charges to assault with a deadly weapon, returning to San Luis obispo after serving his sentence.

On June 23, 1982, Breslin showed up at the apartment of Linda Sue Cain, (37) the wife of his California Mens Colony cell mate Douglas Cain. For unclear reasons he was allowed inside and proceeded to stab Linda Cain to death. He then strangled their eight year old daughter, Desiree Cain. He moved their bodies into the bathroom and penned a letter full of incoherent ramblings and profanities, as well as his desire to end his life. Afterwards, breslin headed to Nevada in Cains stolen vehicle.

Breslin eventually crashed the car into a ditch near Jackpot, Nevada and hitched a ride to the nearby little salmon creek campground where campers provided aid and told him to stay put until law enforcement arrived. Forty-nine year old sheriff deputy Denny Lawrence was notified of the incident. After locating the wrecked vehicle, he drove to the campground to check on the driver (Breslin). Deputy Lawrence proceeded check Breslins license and file an accident form at the hood of his patrol car, when Breslin suddenly walked up behind him with his .22 caliber pistol which he concealed with a blanket and shot him in the back of the head. Though the shot wasn't fatal, it left the deputy in critical condition.

Breslin then took the deputies revolver and started firing both guns at campers with the intent to kill them. After fleaing into their camper vans, two brothers (unnamed) took their own firearms and returned shots upon Breslin. The brothers managed to hit Breslin four times in the chest and once in the leg. Once he was on the ground, bystanders called an ambulance which transported both Lawrence and Breslin to seperate hospitals in Idaho.

Breslin was taken to Magic Valley Memorial Hospital in twin falls where he died of his injuries on June 28, 1982. Deputy Lawrence was transported to St. Alphonsus Hospital in Boise where he was left in comatose for several days. Although Lawrence survived his injuries, he was left permanently disabled until his death in 2012.

Conclusion: A letter was found on Breslins body during an examination which proclaimed it was his new years resolution to be dead before 1983 and that his body should be thrown into a river. No motives for Breslins crimes were ever established and exact reasons for his suicidal tendencies remains unclear.
