I'm guessing, he never even imagined it would actually reach him until it was already too late, probably the better choice too, he was already in a good spot, if he'd started running, he could have been swept away / knocked out and in far more danger.

A lot of the people in the Everest base camp avalanche after the earthquake got injured/died from the rocks it picked up and slammed into the people on the ground
