Brian Gabriel Mendieta Pereyra, a 20-year-old man, was arrested for the violent assault on Edgardo Estay as he was leaving the Club Universitario.
During his testimony in court, Mendieta Pereyra stated, “I didn’t mean to kill him.”
He is currently in prison while the case, which is classified as attempted murder, is ongoing.
Footage of the incident shows that there was no prior fight, as the defendant approached Estay directly and struck him, causing him to fall unconscious on the street.
Edgardo Estay, 43, a native of Pedro Luro, suffered severe head and facial injuries.
He was taken to the Municipal Hospital, where he remains in intensive care, on a ventilator, and in serious condition.

In his statement, the defendant mentioned an altercation with the victim, which is being investigated to understand the context of the attack that occurred in the early morning hours of Saturday, July 4, on San Juan Street, near Alem Avenue.
Mendieta Pereyra, who has a prior history of street fights, was identified thanks to the work of the Patrol Command, the Second Police Station, and the analysis of security camera footage.
The investigation is being conducted by UFIJ No. 5, which will now evaluate the defendant’s statement along with the evidence collected.
