A bartender who worked at a real scummy, dimly lit shot and beer place told me they always had stew bums, and other garbage humans show up begging for a shot of rot gut for free. As they were wiping the bar of assorted spills, cigarette and cigar ashes, food crumbs, fingernail pairings, and other effluvia..the wet bar rag was rung out into a shot glass that was kept under the bar. When the shot glass got filled with this mystery brew ....and a drunk begger wandered in, they gave him the drink on condition he never again darken their doorway. The brew was referred to as a " wipe-shot"
