My grandson is autistic and basically non verbal. Even he doesn't think he's a fucking cat. And if he did try to pull that shit at school the last thing my son would do is support it.

Pretend play is healthy and necessary. But you don't indulge that shit 24/7.

I agree with @Ellzibette

This girl is clearly autistic. She would do better being helped to understand her autism. If being a cat at school helped her learn, fair play. Let her get better grades, but she won’t do well if she’s not helped to understand her true ‘self’ which clearly isn’t a cat. The cat persona will be a tool to help her cope with the complex social system she struggles in, but it’s not one that will work as well as a true understanding of self and her autism.

My daughter, who is autistic, had a couple of months as a cat. But she was two years old. She prowled round like a cat and would scare older kids at the park by randomly hissing at them which was funny as fuck. However, she was only 2 and the girl in the article will be around 13. My daughter knows she is autistic, owns it and identifies as herself. Both my kids (aged 10 and 8) think the identification/ pronoun stuff is utter bollocks, just like me. That’s their own assessment, because they are sensible, most of the time, just like me 😂😂😂.

I would add to this that there has to be some consideration as to whether or not her behavior is disruptive to the classroom and the quality of education of the other students in the class. At 13, clearly, a student acting like a cat in every way is not only going to be disruptive and detrimental to the class, but it doesn't serve the girl herself at all either. Preteens are cruel humans, and the girl would be better served in a classroom specialized to her needs. Its unfair, in my opinion, to make all the other kids in the classroom accept and conform to the behaviors of a single student.

And I don't say this lightly, my daughter (now grown) is also on the spectrum and I wanted her integrated into a regular classroom as much as possible because she needed to be prepared for life. Life is not a special needs classroom and the world doesn't cater to your every need. I won't live forever and she needed to be prepared for the real world. That being said, I agreed with her being in a special classroom for those subjects where her particular challenges would have slowed down every other kid in the class....this ended up being only reading comprehension and to this day she has difficulty understanding contextual cues and is very literal. Point being, it wasn't all about MY child, and while I wanted her treated "normally" I understood that there were instances where doing so would negatively affect her classmates in such a way that it became unfair.

In this cat situation the child herself is being hurt, the classroom is being hurt, but I guess the parents of the child feel some sort of vindication that the world stopped moving and changed direction for their little snowflake. That kid won't survive adulthood with parents like that.

if I was this kids parent I'd know how to cure this real quick ... we all sit down for dinner and she gets a bowl of friskies on the floor or maybe a can of fancy feast
I would tell her I'm allergic and we have to get rid of her. Then I would get the travel cage down from the attic. If that didn't snap her out of it then it would be off to the fire station with her to go live with the other unwanted children.
