bizarre Guess He Ain't Looking Directly At It

Honestly not a bad idea in a pinch but I’ve had welders flash 3 times for trying to squint before they came out with the auto darkening lenses so not one to talk
Had it a few times myself. I don't know if you know what an arc air gouger is, a place I worked one of the new labourers was actually staring at the arc and said to the gouger fuck me that thing is bright the gouger said you were looking at it? Yes and it's bright. The guy was missing for a few days and was lucky he could ever see again.

Used arc air when I worked at a foundry over 30 years ago. It was used to burn off excess and unwanted metal from steel castings that had just come out of the foundry and had been shot blasted to remove moulding sand. The arc air apparatuses were inside enclosures with leather curtains and the castings were fed to the arc air operators via a conveyor like an X-Ray scanner conveyor at airport security. Incredible piece of kit but you need to protect your eyes.

I’m an electrician now but still weld on the side and just the other day I heard a similar story and the person lost his eyesight completely because he got an infection in both his eyes. Dumbass did it over a bet

I've been looking at the sun like this for years, solar eclipses and shit, great idea for a welder, 100% UV protection.

I used it a lot when I worked in the oil rig yards it is a good piece of kit, the half inch carbon will cut a big channel in 2" steel in no time. The UV rays when close are more intense than the sun he would have been better off staring at the sun than staring at the arc and as I said I don't know how he did not do any permanent damage although there is a good chance he did. Arc eye from welding is painful as it burns the eye and when the skin starts growing over it hours later it is like someone rubbing hot sand in your eyes so I can imagine the pain he would have been in.
