I went to a Ruth Chris for dinner on a vacation. The waitress followed me to my car and says ‘Sir was there anything wrong with the service you received this evening? “ I was shocked the hired help would even address me outside the restaurant. I looked at her like she lost her mind. She says you did not leave a tip.

I asked her, what exactly did you do that was worth me paying you anything more then the price of my meal? She said I took your drink and food orders and made sure you had everything you needed. I look at her like she is fucking stupid, and say you are a waitress that’s your simple job.

But sir, tips is how I pay my bills. I asked her if I was her employer? She says of course not. I told her if she wanted a tip, get an adult job and grow the fuck up!

I went back in and got the General managers contact information. He picks up the phone, I am cordial explaining to him what transpired. He sounds embarrassed, tells me he is sorry, and to please give him a minute to speak to the restaurant manager. The manager gave me a $150.00 gift card good at any location and told me he was sorry for what happened

‘I told him I was upset about what happened, he told me he will personally make sure this will never happen again.
I hope she got fired. How dare the fucking waitress question me.

I agree with Bob that as a rule we don’t tip in the U.K. as staff are usually salaried. It is however becoming increasingly normal for a service charge to appear on your bill/check. This can be upto 20%. It is more common with higher-end restaurants rather than for chain establishments. You do have the right to decline this charge. In this case you have no idea who the money goes to. I only tip when I feel that I have received service that is over and above normal standards. I will tip direct to the server and always in cash. It is always worth asking the server what the policy is on tipping and whether tips are shared across all staff, kept by the company.

I am pretty sure in the U.K. it is illegal to employ someone on a tips only basis.

buy your own restaurant then run it the way as you see fit. get your "rosies" (idk if you know if you get the reference) and there will be a more sterile environment as you stride for,and you wont have to worry about the "help" interacting with patrons prying into private lives, and handing out 150 dollar coupons because of an altercation. and there would be no training involved either. all the while putting more money into your pockets..
