They're usually in shock. The best thing to do when you have an injury like that or a penetrating injury, an injury where you could hypothetically bleed out IS to stay calm & not freak out if you can. Also don't get combative with anyone trying to save/help you even if they move or poke your injury and it hurts like fucking hell.
