Serious How many GG members can drive a vehicle equipped with a manual transmission?

I used to drive a manual. But when I bought my second (current) car, I got talked into the automatic because the removal of the gear shift allowed for a center storage console, and because it actually had slightly better mileage.

I regretted it almost right away when I found that I couldn't merge onto the highway as quickly if needed. Hated that feeling of being limited and just having to wait for the car to sluggishly move through its gears. Now I'm just used to it.

After not having driven manual for 20 years, I doubt I could do it anymore. And I don't even know anyone anymore who has a manual who could let me practice.

I’m from England so I can. Generally here you always take your test in a manual. If you do your test in an auto then you can’t ever drive a manual unless you retest in one

Most British people drive manual cars . You can drive autos on your license . However you can do an automatic gearbox test that only lets you dive an automatic car . I've driven/ owned both . Autos are good on big , with big engines . On something like a nissan micra it'd be stupid

If you do a lot of 4x4 driving on rough terrain and in hot areas like Australia and espeically if you are towing then manual gear boxes are best as one thing they don't do is over heat and cause issues. Auto's can do that.

And when you go out into remote areas, of which I've done a lot in Aus, hundreds of kms from any help, then with a manual you always have the option of a roll start or a pull start if you have a mate when you have a flat battery.

My Landcruisers have always had twin battery systems so that if my start battery goes flat I can jump start my own engine with jumper leads.

I used to tow a camper trailer through central Aus for thousands of km along sand tracks in low gear 2 or 3, ie in low ratio. There is a 'transfer case' attatched to the gear box so you can drive in high range with all 5 gears or low range ditto. A lot of power goes through the gear box and manuals never get hot, or at least, never get hot enough to cause problems unlike autos with their complex make ups.

or you could install an external tranny cooler to keep it very happy, especially with those small trailers

I've driven hundreds and thousand of kms in a manual. Most of them in a series of Landcruiser 4x4's with the high/low range stick as well.

My Landcruiser got written off by a tree a couple of months ago but I have an XRT Jeep in auto which has one of the German autos in it which is 8 speed and it's very good. It's gear changes are probably better than I could do manually.

My wife has a Subaru Outback, auto, which has one of the 'infinate' weired kevlar banded gear box things. It goes like a bat out of hell too as has the XT option with the WRX motor. Good on fuel. Great on fuel.

The beauty of the Landcruiser is that it has super low gearing in 'low' and with just the standard 4.2 litre non turbo diesel I towed a container around our block to re position it and it towed it forward wth the engine in idle. Alas it's looking sad now:
