The 'object' was around the same size as Mars, it was a protoplanet called Theia. Theia pretty much ceased to exist upon impact, because the impact resulted in the destruction and merging of both Theia and a part of the early Earth, leading to the formation of debris that eventually merged into the moon. So, while Theia contributed to the creation of the moon, it did not survive as a distinct entity following the collision.
