I thought it was common knowledge that a poisonous snake can still inject you with venom once it's head is severed. You are supposed to bury or burn the head so someone does not get bit. If bit you apply a tourniquet if possible, hydrate and get anti venom. If they would have tied off that arm he may have lived, but lost the arm.
