I was reading through the comments and was about to mention Holmes when I saw yours. If you can get a copy of the book The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson, it's fucking great. It goes into great detail about the building that Holmes modified to help him lure his victims. And all the while, the Chicago World's Fair was being prepared. It really is a great read.
