I think this is a bit of a hyped up story, yes the military would have preferred it not to have happened (?) but it is a combat aircraft and sooner or later one of them would be lost in either combat or unfriendly circumstances/environment. Stealth doesn't mean indestructible, it means hard for radar to locate and track. You don't put your real "TOP SECRET" shit in a plane that could be shot down or lost anywhere in the World and could be found by anyone unfriendly. Your "TOP SECRET" shit stays home and the aircraft communicates with your "TOP SECRET" shit, it would be that device that communicates with "TOP SECRET" shit that would be the objective of a Foreign Power.
If this aircraft's loss would be so devastating to the US Military then why/how do the Press even know about it? Surely it would be "TOP SECRET"?

Wreckage from a Japanese F-35 stealth fighter jet has been found, a day after it disappeared from radar over the Pacific Ocean.

The pilot of the plane, however, is still missing, Japanese military officials said.

Parts of the plane have been recovered during search operations at sea.

It is not known why the plane, which is less than a year old, lost contact and crashed.

"We have collected parts from the jet fighter's tail fin so we [believe] it crashed," Defence Minister Takeshi Iwaya told reporters.

The fighter jet went missing at 19:27pm (10:27 GMT) on Tuesday as it was flying 135km (84 miles) east of Misawa, a city in north-eastern Japan.

It lost contact about 30 minutes after taking off from the Misawa Air Base.

According to Mr Iwaya, the missing pilot had sent a signal to abort the mission. All communication with him was lost shortly after.

Rescue teams are continuing their search for the male pilot who is in his 40s, according to news site Kyodo.

No problems with the aircraft had previously been reported, according to Japan's public broadcaster NHK.

Japan has been deploying F-35s, which cost at least $90m (£68m), to replace its ageing F-4 fighter jet.

The country has now grounded its 12 remaining F-35 fighter jets at the Misawa base temporarily, said Mr Iwaya.

This is only the second time an F-35 has crashed since the jet began flying, according to Reuters.

Common sense really. In WW2 the Norden bombsight fitted to B17's had a thermite grenade fitted to it to ensure its complete destruction should the plane crash. You don't let your secret stuff fall into your enemies hands.

An 'Enigma' got it British hands in WW2 due to the fail of a German u-boat Kaleun to destroy the secret materials on board of U-559. The boat got damaged during the fight with a destroyer and he thought it would sink anyway and jumped over board.
It's said that the machine and codebooks they captured that day was very valuable for the guys in Bletchley Park.

Oh oh .. thank goodness they recovered the plane, otherwise the "Dark Rider Batman" version of the F35 would come ...

HAD a lot of problems. They wouldn't roll out the airframe for everyday use if the testing issues hadn't been addressed.
The carrier version had the most problems, and they're being distributed today.

I know but I still think there are bugs in the system.

That was the first case with the older codes for the Enigma with 3 wheels.
The trio of clever poles sorted enigma out before turing even had a run. Britain couldnt find it's ass til poland showed them where it was.

Yeah, all that was a long lasting game with several breakthroughs and countermeasures on both sides.

Above I meant the first case when an u-boat (U-110) was brought up and a newly built Enigma plus documents were reachable. The machine without the currently used code was not so helpful as you know.
