Under your bed. 2019. Japan.

Domestic violence and the lonely stranger.
A young bloke takes a fancy to a fellow classmate, they have coffee once and she shows a intrest in keeping guppies (small fish.)
From there he doesn't forget her, tracks her down years later and opens a small fish business overlooking her house.
She is the victim of brutal domestic violence and he is a witness to it, not only from the room above the store but inside the house.
The cast is mainly three actors with 90% of the film done in his voice over and flashbacks. It's a interesting film with him presented as a complete loner, obsessed with her, but unable to bring himself to help. As the film goes on the violence gets nasty.
An uncomfortable watch but worth it.
No english subtitles on the trailer.

The Witch.

The witch.webp

I found this film to be fascinating, different and somehow quite captivating... there doesn't always have to be blood and splashes...

Fatman. 2020.

A rich kid orders a hit on Santa.
Mel Gibson is a grizzed Santa that has to deal with cut backs and a hitman sent by a brat to kill him.
I watched this simply because the trailer was amusing, to a degree the film works, but it kinda bizzare. Gibson is funny as 'Santa'.
There is no CGI flying sleighs or any shit like that, and for a Mel movie very little violence.
Entertaining but his back catalouge provides more watchable viewing.

Wolves vs humans.
Apple studio produced this Irish animation film about a village run by a english lord that is hell bent of ridding the forest of a den of wolves. In there is a mother and child who can transform, at night, into physical wolves.
I heard about this film via a podcast when a lady put in a top 10 list.
It's a kids film. But the animation and the story itself was enough for me to get a copy and watch it, i was working on a couple of pictures of my own but invested in the film. It centers mainly of the two female girls who form a strong friendship and how the overcome the nasty english ruler.
The animation and story were really good, i much prefered it to anything Pixar or Disney have done.

An officer and a spy. 2019. Dir. Roman Polanski.
7/10
A officer in a the french army in the late 1800's is tried and found guilty of treason, a fellow officer uncovers evidence that his conviction is a fraud.
Polanski directed this drama and although it got a little complicated with all the french names, it was a interesting and at times tense drama. The acting, sets and costumes were excellent.
With a run time of just over two hours, it did feel a little long but never boring.

Mother. (Maza) Japan. 2020.
10/10
A mother and son on a downward spiral.
Based on true events, a story of a woman and her young son as she leeches off men, sister, parents or gets him to do it for her so they both can live. The film is bleak with a grinding sadness that is evident within the first 10 mins when you see the parents of the woman going off at her because she just wants money and will lie or use the child to get it.
It shows, unflinchingly, the co-dependant relationship they both have towards each other, she has no intention of lifting herself up and being a example towards him or the little girl later on, and even thou he exhibits the drive to get a education and some sort of stabity, his devotion to her overrides it.
A gut wrenching drama of fine quality.
