They should also learn that most departments in the USA follow an escalation policy. It basically boils down to a Have the biggest stick mentality. Guy has a pistol/gun? Try and get a rifle if able. Guy has a knife? Pull your gun etc. That kind of mentality. Albeit not perfect in every scenario, it's in the back of a lot of cops minds. This is one of them that saved this officers life.
