Missouri Parents Allegedly Put Baby in Microwave
Authorities in Missouri have filed child abuse charges against a couple who allegedly placed their infant son in a microwave, PEOPLE confirms.
Court records accessed by PEOPLE say Derick Boyce-Slezak and Mikala Boyce-Slezak, both 22, of Park Hills, Missouri, were arrested on Tuesday.
They are being held on $500,000 bond and neither has retained an attorney who could comment for them.
Neither defendant has entered a plea, according to court filings.
The court records allege the baby boy was almost 4-months-old when he was treated at a St. Louis hospital back in April for facial burns.
The baby also had a fractured skull and a subdural hematoma, which caused blood to collect between his brain and skull.
According to authorities, Mikala Boyce-Slezak allegedly told a social worker that Derick Boyce-Slezak dropped the child while trying to recreate a television commercial.
The couple allegedly told doctors the facial burn was actually a rash caused by a chemical cleaner, the court documents state.
But the social worker alleges Mikala Boyce-Slezak told her the child was put in the microwave by her husband, who briefly turned the appliance on.
It was unclear Thursday why it took authorities seven months to file charges against the parents.
