A mum-of-five has been arrested after she was allegedly living with the bodies of her dead children - in order to keep claiming benefits to fund her party lifestyle.
The woman, only identified as Daria, reportedly kept the corpses inside the filthy flat in the town of Velikiye Luki, in north-western Russia's Pskov Oblast. One baby was also found to be unregistered on the country's births, deaths and marriages lists.
The shocking conditions were so bad that police found the remains of one of the deceased infants still had a nappy on. Officers stormed into the flat and found the horrifying conditions on November 23, with disturbing footage showing the mum, aged 34, disclosing where she had left the corpses to the police, according to local media.
Among the bodies was a four-year-old boy, who still had his clothes on. The lifeless body of an eight-year-old girl was sadly discovered at a country home which was purchased with the benefits.
A crime reconstruction team were said to have been visibly shocked as she placed a dummy where one of the corpses was left to decompose. The grim discovery was made when another of Daria's children - her eldest child, a 12-year-old boy, who was living with his gran - went to her apartment and saw one of the bodies.
The boy then reportedly told his gran, Daria's unnamed mother, who alerted the police. She told officers: "There is a dead child in my daughter’s apartment. He is in bed, but the bones are already visible."
Daria's only other surviving child, a five-year-old girl, lived in the apartment surrounded by her siblings' bodies. Local media said little is known about the baby that died as it was not registered when it was born but it was believed to have been just months old.
Neighbours said they often heard the children scream and said that Daria treated them cruelly, according to reports. The mum is believed to have led a wild lifestyle of parties funded by child benefits.
A sixth child, Daria's firstborn, is said to have died years ago under strange circumstances, of which are yet to be clarified. Investigators are determining whether Daria is mentally competent to stand trial. Russian police are said to be investigating Daria for murder. If found to be mentally competent, Daria could be jailed for 20 years if convicted. The investigation is ongoing.
