"Las Choapas (Veracruz) – An attempted execution ended with the death of a young woman on the afternoon of Tuesday, October 29, in the municipality of Las Choapas, in the state of Veracruz. The target was Juan Bautista López, a union leader of CTM-CATEM, who reacted to the armed attack and managed to survive after two confrontations with the woman.
It all began around 4 p.m., when Bautista López, who leads the truckers' union in the region, went to a site in the Ignacio Zaragoza neighborhood to supervise the placement of landfill material. He was inside his red Ford Ranger pickup truck, with the windows closed, when he was surprised by a young woman who approached with a bag. From inside it, she pulled out a firearm and fired at least three times. One of the shots went through the vehicle's window and hit him in the jaw.
Even wounded, the union leader managed to open the car door and return fire. The assailant fled on foot, while Bautista, with a bloodied face, drove to the "Doctor Pedro Coronel Pérez" hospital to seek medical attention.
Later, at the corner of Manzano and Playón Sur streets in the La Sabana neighborhood, Bautista encountered the woman again, who was now a passenger on a yellow motorcycle driven by a man. While attempting to pass the pickup truck, the motorcycle collided with the vehicle. The driver fled on foot, abandoning the young woman on the ground.
Even after falling, the woman tried to shoot the union leader again. Bautista López, despite his injuries, reacted and shot her. One of the shots was fatal, and the young woman died at the scene. The weapon she used remained beside her body.
The woman has not yet been officially identified, but preliminary information indicates that she is from Cancún and passed through Villahermosa before arriving in Las Choapas. The man who was driving the motorcycle remains at large.
Juan Bautista López's health condition has been described as delicate but stable. He remains hospitalized, and the case is still under investigation by local authorities."
