I met quite a few swans today, on a canal boat trip. They are lovely if you respect them, like most animals.

The fuckers in this video are idiots.

This mum and dad let me walk around them and their cygnet as they preened themselves.

Hmm.... well, it depends actually - IF the swan has eggs during the nesting season OR the cygnets are very small, then yes, you had better make yourself scarce. What a lot of people don't know is that the whack of a swan's wing, can cause big painful bruises. So I am guessing that this swan couple had eggs or "toddlers" to look after.
(Probably they were idiots, swimming in an area where you could expect to disturb wildlife.)

What a lot of people don't know is that the whack of a swan's wing, can cause big painful bruises.

I'd imagine those lot of people didn't live near water because pretty much everyone I know was told "A swans wing can break your arm." as a kid so we didn't fuck about near them.

In Aus we only get black swans, which are beutiful but the white ones I've seen in Britain are really, really beautiful.

I've been on remote lakes and rivers kayaking and canoing and have seen 30 to 50 black swans all start to take off at once. The sound in the silence of the area is amazing. Lots of fast smacking of water sounds from their water running to speed up to take off velocity.

But if you respect them, as you pointed out, they're fine, never agressive.

The way they soar in formation is great too. We get them on the little lake just below my house. Pelicans too, of which ours are white with black slashes on the wings.

My son, when he was 9, was feeding them bread at a place we camped on the Murray River and these pelicans all moved closer to get at the food. My son began to back away and the pelicans moved closer and he started to run and the pelicans began running after him too!

When I got up to him I showed him the trick. I put my arm around his shoulders and said 'were going to run at them' and off we went and off they went in the opposite direction, much to my sons relief!
