Agreed, putting your life at the whim of 18th century technology and the wind is a recipe for disaster. There is no steering mechanism. It's like going out to sea in a life raft only the sea is 3 dimensional and the raft is leaking, has no rudder or paddles, and if you fall out you die.

I'm familiar with the Flying Wallendas, a family of tight rope walkers. Very skilled and successful. Some had very violent deaths...
