I'd rather see that, than to just let them walk scot free. Wish he would have knocked her on her ass.
But if you take into consideration which way was cheapest and would have saved the store money would have been to just let her take it. It may not be right but when the negatives outweigh the positives you can see why companies do what they do.

Depends on the jurisdiction and obviously what she took dollar amount wise which determines stores' policies on prosecuting them. If misdemeanor amounts they generally do not prosecute them or try to retrive the merchandise. Some jurisdictions treat shop lifters as mental defectives (cleptomania, compulsion issues, etc.). As long as there are no additional charges related to violent crimes, they send them to a program for mental type counseling. That costs tax payers money so, loss prevention companies sometimes do just essentially let them take the merchandise but the catch is theives know all this.
At what point as a community, a society are we not going to keep allowing theives to fuck honest ppl in the ass? Every stolen item ends up adding to overhead & operation costs & that means everything costs more. Fuck that!
Also, insurance companies will not necessarily keep covering loss due to theft.

You know who's really fucking us in the ass though? it's the supermarkets themselves. Marking up product where their profit margins are insane. A can of grub costs 20cents and they sell it for five bucks! then when people struggle financially to buy much - 'some' resort to just taking it. Perhaps if the mark ups in price weren't so high it might reduce instances of stealing in the first place. (maybe not.. but it's something I just thought of)

Do you know how much it cost a store to prosecute a shoplifter? A lot. There is no insurance for product loss. Whatever they attempt to steal is already a total loss. Then the employee or employees who try to stop them are not doing their job while trying to stop the shoplifter so that productivity loss. Then spend time cleaning up the mess that was made. Then the employee who witnessed them steal has to be in court all day when their trial comes up. The store has to pay the employee an entire days wage for the employee to do that.
Stopping that theft cost about $400-500 when they could have let them go and it only cost the company $20-$30.

Grocery store profit margins are around 2.2%. That's for every 1.00 spent they get 2.2c of it. A store can’t just decide to increase the prices of its products unreasonably because it knows that people have an incredible number of choices.

I’m a security Gaurd and I can tell you letting her go with the stock is not saving money is it ? Explain? If they let her just walk away with stock the store looses the stock and because she found it easy to steal unchallenged she will return likely with friends. So why would it be good idea to let her go please explain?
