Europe is going to be fucked this winter.
For countries like the UK (yes I know the UK isn't a country) or Norway there is absolutely no reason for the consumer being hit with these ridiculous power bills as they produce enough oil & gas that they should be energy self-sufficient. Yes, oil & gas are traded globally but in the short term through royalty or tax rebates they should be able to ease the pain to the consumer. I don't like that sort of price manipulation but these are difficult & weird times.
For countries like Germany or France, fuck you. Those assholes have elected socialist/green governments for decades and shat all over the petroleum & nuclear industries this is what they deserve. Get one of the hundreds of thousands Syrian or African migrants like Habeeb or Jamal you welcomed into your countries to run on a treadmill to generate electricity. You virtue signalling dinks made your bed, now shiver in it.

I generally do two shopping trips per month for everything other than meat and my grocery list is pretty static and was consistently $180-$200/trip. I placed an order last night and it was $260. I thought I had screwed up and had something extra in the cart but nope, just everything has got more expensive. I don't know how families or people on a fixed income do it.

Well said. The funniest thing in all this is western leaders (mostly from Europe) blaming Russia for cutting them off from oil and gas supplies and being "held to ransom". Who sanctioned who first again? If you're gonna cut off your nose to spite your face, well, fuck your face. Now they will learn the hard way. Where's the solar panels, wind farms and all the hippies preaching green power and self reliance?

I inherently dislike Russia & Russians, they're drunken cunts who can't be trusted. This feeling goes back much further than the current Ukrainian kerfuffle.
The recent sanctions notwithstanding the Russians have been fucking with Western Europe's energy supply for decades. Russia gets their panties in a knot, they constrain oil & gas to the west.....Russia & its oligarchs want to manipulate the market they scale up/down oil & gas to the west.
While I'd like nothing more that the world to buy & consume a whole lot more Canadian oil & gas I think the best non-hydrocarbon energy source is nuclear, in particular small modular reactors. Aside from using atomic decay SMRs have very little in common with the large pressurized reactors currently is use around the world. SMRs are fundamentally more simple & reliable, easier & quicker to deploy and inherently safer. But because they're nuclear the environmentalists get all spazzy.
Russia called their bluff. Once the sanctions went down oil and gas was still available, but because Russia was cut off from swift and everything else banking related, Putin demanded payment in Rubles from euro nations. It's brinkmanship and here we are.

There was a fire last year at the Sellinge converter station, it's where we have a major subsea cable running between England and France to help with demand. They were able to get it back up to about 75% capacity but it won't be until next year it gets back to full.
We were already warned last year about blackouts etc because of that, and now we have storms, extreme winter weather, the high prices, war and everything else on top of that lol. Probs gonna be a general strike sooner or later
