Tbf I haven’t touched my handbrake since the day I got mine 7 years ago, if you have auto hold on and your seatbelt then it automatically puts on the handbrake when you turn the ignition off or put it in park, I also have a DSG so the gearbox is locked

Also if you’ve done a lot of braking and put the handbrake on once it cools it can actually release it
